WINERY BACKGROUND
Known for their Chardonnay's and Cabernet Sauvignon's, Far Niente (meaning 'without a care' in Italian) was founded in Oakville, California in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer. The winery prospered for 34 years until Prohibition in 1919. Sixty years later, Gil Nickel (founder of Dolce and Nickel & Nickel winery) bought and restored the winery over a period of three year, earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
